The reason I have stayed, when other creatives were leaving for New York, D.C., or wherever the next thing was supposed to be, is the art and the artists who are firmly planted here. Initially, I couldn\u2019t quite articulate what made the scene so compelling. I just knew it was something real: a creativity that felt palpable, almost atmospheric, and completely contagious. Having spent time working in a Seattle gallery, I knew it was rare.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Cara Ober, founder of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bmoreart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BmoreArt<\/a><\/em>, a publication and gallery that has been chronicling Baltimore\u2019s creative scene for over a decade, calls this a city of artists. I call it a city of innovators and hustlers. Both are true. What I know for certain is that Baltimore is the kind of place that, if you\u2019re receptive, will remind you that creativity is innately within all of us.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-8235d20\" data-block-id=\"8235d20\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-8235d20-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-5d9a8a0\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"5d9a8a0\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-5d9a8a0-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-5d9a8a0-inner-blocks\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ee154e9e wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\" data-block-type=\"core\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" data-block-type=\"core\">Baltimore&#8217;s Creative Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-ce63644\" data-block-id=\"ce63644\"><style>.stk-ce63644 {margin-bottom:0px !important;}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Start with Derrick Adams, the celebrated Baltimore-raised artist who recently became co-owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mtroyaltavern\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mount Royal Tavern<\/a>, a storied dive bar that has served as the nucleus of Baltimore\u2019s creative community for generations. His partners include artist Marlon Ziello, musician Dan Deacon, and builder Nicholas Wisniewski. On any given night there, you might find your old law school professor, a local legend, Maryland Institute College of Art students, or folks who have driven from Delaware just to see the bar\u2019s famed \u201cSistine Chapel\u201d ceiling.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Adams refers to the tavern as a social sculpture. \u201cLegendary things have happened here,\u201d he says. \u201cImportant Baltimore people have left their mark\u2014on the walls, on the ceiling, on the counter. We\u2019ve been entrusted as stewards of this space.\u201d Regular exhibitions are featured on the walls too, rotating shows that give the place another layer. Shawn is often seen behind the counter barista-ing himself. In addition to a menu of chaat and incredible coffee, the shop is filled with an artful array of home wares, local art, and a bookshelf stacked with curated books and magazines you won\u2019t find anywhere else. Royal&nbsp;&nbsp; Blue occupies the former Gallery One space in Station North and has become the natural progeny of The Crown, the legendary venue where so many Baltimore folks had their first show, a place to meet creative people, flirt, dance, and congregate. Founded by artist Jeffrey Kent, Bliftd is unlike anything else in the city. Inside a nondescript warehouse building with a banner in the window reading <strong>\u201c<\/strong>BUYARTFOR4U.COM<strong>\u201d <\/strong>is a sprawling creative campus with floor-to-ceiling windows, natural light pouring through 12-foot glass, a parquet dance floor, a listening lounge stocked with nearly 2,000 records (\u201cBach to rock,\u201d Kent calls its range), private studios, shared artist workspace, and a visiting artist residency program.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The roster of artists working out of Bliftd reads like a who\u2019s who of Baltimore\u2019s most innovative and compelling figures: Jerrell Gibbs (whose upcoming show at the Baltimore Museum of Art is not to be missed), Alexis Tyson, Nicole Clark, Allison Parker, and Kelvin Bullock, among others. Through a partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pendry.com\/baltimore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pendry Baltimore<\/a>, hotel guests can be chauffeured directly to the campus for a studio tour, a rare chance to see working artists in their actual element\u2014not a white cube approximation of it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cI\u2019ve been targeting people who visit Baltimore,\u201d Kent says, \u201cand I want them to see something that\u2019s not The Wire. Owners Shawn Chopra and Anne Morgan launched it with a deceptively simple question: What was Baltimore missing? The answer was a place that held clothing, home goods, food, and genuine communities under one roof, curated with real intention. \u201cIt was a combination of all the things I was into,\u201d Chopra says.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Good Neighbor\u2019s annual Design Camp brings designers and creatives from around the world to Baltimore each fall for an immersive gathering. Chopra is deliberate about accessibility. \u201cI want people to feel like you don\u2019t have to be in the art world to come to an art event,\u201d he says. On what makes Baltimore\u2019s creative scene different from anywhere else: \u201cI think it\u2019s authentic. People aren\u2019t making stuff here to be seen. Ober has grown the brand into a gallery, a book imprint, and a calendar of events.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">She has seen enough cycles to be clear-eyed about what sustains a creative scene versus what just looks like one. \u201cPart of the writing we do is around how to avoid organizations having to shut down,\u201d she says, \u201chow to actually nurture and support the people putting their time and energy into galleries, third spaces, and cool projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The artists and culture-keepers who make Baltimore what it is do it themselves, and they make a way\u2014even when it appears there is no way.
